I'm toying with the idea of going to cosmetology school....
I've been studying economics but beauty is my passion. I'm just not sure how to tell my mom and fiance that this is what I want to do. Last time I brought it up he laughed and said that I was a really smart girl....
They both look down on what I want to do; also in December I'm moving so I wouldn't be able to start for awhile. I'd have to be freelance for a bit.....

Why do you want to go to cosmetology school (aesthetics, makeup, hair)? Have you researched programs in your area (or soon to be new area)?
If you're interested in just doing makeup, then there is plenty of room to self-educate (books, forums, videos etc.) while you make up your mind about whether to switch fields or not.
Consider that there are plenty of people who have full time jobs and freelance on the side. It can take quite some time to build up a client base that's big enough to sustain you on it's own.

I highly recommend going to cosmetology school and get a license in esthetics OR go to an ACCREDITED makeup artist school. As Mandy mentioned you don't need a license to do makeup but to be perfectly honest an education of some kind is always best to fall back on just in case.
I cringe when I see some of the so-called MUA on Youtube do makeup on other people with very questionable sanitary practices and conditions.
Makeup Magazine, who puts on IMATS, has a list of schools on their website that include accredited schools. You might wonder what the difference is between an accredited on and an unaccredited school is and it's simply that you can get student loans and financial aid from the government if the school is accredited because the school has had it's curriculum approved. (Yes, there's more to accredited schools versus non accredited but if the school is accredited you can get financial aid/loans.)

I'm trying to find an affordable school in sf that's not disgusting in their sanitary and actually teach! It sucks that the paul mitchell one here is SO EXPENSIVE!!

@Nadia I went to Marinello in Seaside, and it is even more expensive than paul mitchell I think. I don't recommend them at all. Don't choose Marinello whatever you do lol.

Sorry to hear they look down on what you want to do! I also agree with Tamara. I think you should definitely do some research about schools in the area you are moving to. In the meantime, I would use other sources available and be a freelance artist. Definitely take pictures or record videos of everything you do. Freelancing can really get your name out there and possible earn some extra money towards school. Good luck with everything!

I got have my tuition in grants, so only had to get loans for half of it. But Marinello is terrible I have not one good thing to say about them besides one of my teachers being an amazing person.

I'm going to do freelance for a bit; I will pursue an accredited cosmetology school when I get back from AP with my (soon to be) husband.

You must research and save money and put some on the side its the best to not have to take out huge loans due to the economy right now and the interest rates.
