I'm the same way! I also don't purchase cosmetics with a lot of chemicals (I talk about a lot of brands and products in my blog that are socially-conscious and health-conscious). I know that L'Oreal tests on animals if you're into drugstore makeup. Definitely look for the little bunny symbol on products and if you have a question, call customer service. They're usually super helpful! Also, when it comes to brushes if you're a fan of natural hair brushes (I'll use teklon but they're not my favorite) some companies do offer cruelty-free natural hair makeup brushes. Rather than killing animals for their fur they just give them a shave. Obviously you have to question what kind of life the animals that are shaved have, but it is an alternatives many makeup lovers choose if they want natural hair brushes.
PETA has a list of cruelty-free companies, too: http://www.peta.org/living/beauty-and-personal-care/companies/default.aspx
Hope that helps!

Love & Toast does not test on animals. There are some animal products in some of their products (specifically bees wax in the lip balms/butters) but other than that they're a cruelty free company.

Wet 'n' Wild and Urban Decay are also cruelty free companies.

Even though they're pricey, Chanel don't test on animals either. Good for the animals, not so much for my purse...

Does anyone else look at the parent companies of certain brands because some of the brands can not test but their owner might so the money would just be going to a testing company? Some brands Im sure that dont test are Physicians Formula, wet n wild, urban decay, sugarpill, milani, nyx i think, elf, too faced, and there are others that I cant think of right now...

Definitely! Also, it seems as though indie makeup companies are far more conscientious than major ones many times. When it comes to skincare companies like Weleda and other natural/organic companies are great! From my experience, if they're picky about ingredients, they're picky about everything else as well!

I no longer purchase products that are tested on animals. Boy were my eyes opened when I started looking into the whole subject. Anyway, glad you're a cruelty free beauty!! Welcome!!

The EWG Database has information on a lot of companies and whether they test on animals, and if they use toxic chemicals in their products. Really eye opening. http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

@Arabelle. Thanks for the link! I'll have to check it out!

@Arabelle Good thinking! I completely forgot to suggest that database. It is great. Once in a while I come across stuff that doesn't have studies or info on it, but in general it is super helpful. It even relays international studies/restrictions when that info is available.

I am so so so overly passionate about animal rights AND also obsessed with makeup lol so I ONLY buy brands that are cruelty free. I admit, I wasn't always so conscious and bought what was available and cheap like loreal and maybelline (which tests on animals!) but now, I definitely make sure all my beauty stuff are cruelty free. I am so glad that other people are too!

When it comes down to it, most chemicals in makeup have been tested on animals. Not necessarily by the company or even the mother company but by the chemical company itself. That's why I've been trying to stay as natural and organic as possible with my makeup.
The independent and smaller brands are generally far more honest with their customers, too, and I like that.

BTW - as much as vegan/cruelty free companies are at making their products as animal friendly as possible, one should know what they're buying as in the actually ingredients.
I was shocked to find out that Black No. 3 - used in eye shadows, mascaras and eyeliners - is made from cattle bones! "...is a washed bone char prepared from calcined cattle bones..." http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?fr=74.2053 - Many of my mascaras contain Black No. 3.

oh wow! I never knew that! I should buy more on the internet for my makeup on those littler known companies but its hard for a teen with no money...

Try Etsy.com and search organic/natural cosmetics/makeup. The stuff there can be even cheaper than drugstore brands and it's awesome. Plus, if you have any questions about the ingredients the seller is happy to answer you honestly.
