The title is misleading, but I need advice from my beauties! Okay I'm turning 14 in eight days and next year I go to high school. I'm seriously considering going to a technical school.
Long story short, the technical school I'd love to go to offers an outstanding curriculum and at the same time it gives you 24 different shops. I want, more than anything, to do cosmetology.
I tried to sign the paper with my dad, and cosmetology is on my fave 6 trades, right after biotechnology(which he wants me to take). My dad is 100% opposed against the idea of cosmetology. I tried to explain it to him, but he said that if I got into cosmetology, he'd take me out of that school and put me in a regular highschool. My mom agrees. What do I do? :( It's my life and I don't wanna look back in the long run and see my parents controlled my career options...

Hello Kim, i know maybe i'm not a right person for you to choose your path career, but you can try to explain to your parents about cosmetology, trying to make your parents understand, never ever go into something that never in your mind, follow your heart and believe you can do it!

yeah thats the thing i've tried to explain it to them but they're close minded and think cosmetology is JUST make up.and i'm obsessed with cosmetology stuff though, that's why i'm always on beautylish and youtube (looking at different ways to do natural remedies on skin or hair) and so i guess i'll do what my dad says and just go to biotechnology because i like that too, but as of now my TRUE love is in cosmetology and its not fair they think they can direct my life..

it makes me sad when people tell me their parents try to direct their lives in every which way possible.. if I were you, since you're only about 14, is go ahead and study the biotechnology but I would take a continued education class at a community college on cosmetology on the side. If you take it and they see you are really interested maybe they would loosen up about it. You parents really should be more supportive of your interests, though. But hey, I'm sure everyone here supports you on wanting to take cosmetology :)

Don't get too stressed over it Kim, your parents are just trying to keep you on the right path. I know my dad flipped out when I dropped out of college and went to cosmetology school. If you really want to get your dose of salon life, you can always get a part time job at a salon sweeping up, washing towels, and answering phones. I know it doesn't sound super glamorous, but if you're in the right salon and everyone there knows your passion, they'll be more than happy to show you tips and tricks. You'll also get a good idea of what it's really like to work in a salon.

My beauty school only did a day of makeup too, and what we did learn had nothing to do with the end result, it was all about making sure however you applied the makeup was according to state board regulations.

@Miss Manny S I actually clean a hair salon twice/four times a week with my mom(:
@terra m I know! I try to tell my dad that but he's super closeminded and only believes himself. i looove all the hair and skincare stuff, and i'm only 13 (14 in 6 days woot party) so i most likely don't know what i'm going to actually do for the rest of my life, but cosmetology is what takes up my mind all of the time now lol

Hi Kim! I turned 20 last September and graduated in May 2010. I knew I wanted to go into Cosmetology and started my first semester at my local community college in Fall 2010. I attended every day (except for a few sick days) and have found that I absolutely love it! I am getting ready to go to State Board in the next month. I know it can be hard when you parents don't want you to do the one thing you want to do most! But I just want to encourage you to got to High School and continue learning all that you can about beauty and the specific fields of Cosmetology now! Your life is just beginning and finishing regular High School courses will only help grow your mind and help prepare you for all the things you have to learn in Cosmetology. Let me let you, girl~ I had NO idea what I was getting myself into... There is A LOT of book work and the test at State Board is no joke. For real life you will need to have the basics, no matter what you do with your life. You want to be able to stand up and be the Professional you know you can be! So don't let the opportunities you have now of learning and growing in the basic fundamentals of becoming an adult and then the next chance you get, as soon as you graduate from High School, jump on Cosmetology School! You'll love it! Its a lot of hard work, but it pays off! And it is a super rewarding career option, and if you are good at what you do and are doing what you love, you can make some major money and touch the lives of many many people! Your future is so bright! So don't give up on High School. It would by no means be a waste of your time! Some day God may give you children of your own and you'll want to be able to point back at your own life and show them how good choices pay off! :)
Hope this gives you a little encouragement, from one young Cosmetologist to another!
