oooh i like the Feria hair color for black... i was once told, if you're gonna do it yourself, go for the more expensive store brands because they're closer in quality to the salon. I don't know how true that is... but the Feria holds up well... And the blue/black color (Starry Night, #20 or 22) is awesome!

is it bad for your hair? and I might get a friend to do it but I'm not sure... does it matter if the product is all natural like the garnier?

well, any hair dye is bad for your hair... it just is. and garnier isn't all natural, it just has natural elements to make it smell less chemical-ish. either way, it's not great for your hair. but a good deep conditioner a day or 2 later makes a big difference :-)

I used that same color and it only lasted in my hair for 2 weeks.

All color isn't bad for your hair. Box color is because they use metallic dyes that the molecules get stuck in layers of your cuticle making in hard to treat our hair if you need to, keeps it from lightening (often does the opposite due to undeveloped color molecules), the colors are not very rich and they use high levels of ammonia and developer that damages your hair. Professional color on the other hand such as Paul Mitchell and Redken have low ammonia levels and they have conditioning agents that actually improve your hair. I suggest going to a salon professional to get it done. Plus they can help you with the color and give selections on what would look good on you and make a customized color just for you. Box color could never do that. (not trying to bash anyone, just trying to educate!)

If you're looking for the most natural least amount of damage as possible when it comes to hair dye, I would use a henna hair dye. It's still damaging, all of them are, but it's a lot better for your hair then the average box dye. Plus, it usually has cocoa butter so it nourishes your hair while you use it. Another tip, my hair is naturally dark brown and I first dyed it black about two or three years ago and I kind of got bored of black in the process. I thought that it would come out, so I could dye it a dark auburn, but the black never came out. I used color corrects three times, and it didn't work. I haven't put black in my hair since about a year ago and my hair is still many different colors. :/ Honestly, if you're never going to get bored of black again then keep it black. BUT, if you want to change it up again, I would just go with the darkest brown you can find. (:

The problem with henna is you have to grow it out. You can't color over it with other hair colors or life the color out (by bleach, effasol, whatever.) I had black hair for 10 years, I'm naturally VERY blonde (about a level 8), & got the black out in 45 minutes with very little damage to my hair. Granted, I wasn't going back to my natural level, I only lightened it up about 5 levels & went a super bright violet-red. Black IS hard to get out, especially box color (drugstore, not professional hair color), but not impossible-it is something you'll want a professional to do.
I've seen some really awful things happen to hair people have tried to color at home, & they've had to spend hundreds of dollars to get it fixed (like, $300-400 & up.) If you're just depositing color (going darker) it's not that bad, but keep in mind if you want to go lighter, color won't lift color, it takes a bleach or some type of chemical lightener to remove the existing color.
