I've had an appointment made with a dermatologist at the hospital to have my skin assessed. Nothing has been successful so far in treating my moderate acne and so they have agreed to let me try roaccutane.

I know it is a VERY powerful drug with a lot of side effects, I'm sure not looking forward to the blood tests... just wanted to ask if anyone has tried it? Is it really the 'miracle cure' it is said to be?

I've never tried it personally.
My sister had it, she had to go on two courses of a high doses, her only side effect was dry skin. It helped majorly but she was not 100% spot free and still gets a few random ones but not many.

However my friend has recently just come off it after just one course and her skin looks incredible.
Unfortunately it does depend on your skin, and acne type. Just get ready for very dry skin! Try avoid sun exposure! :)

Hope it works for you :)

PS: have you tried benzyol peroxide

It worked pretty well for me :)

I had severe acne about 6 years ago, and when I finally got on Roaccutane, I have to say it was a godsend. Generally, it isn't harmful if your dermatologist/doctor takes the right precautions, eg. blood test, adequate dosage, etc.

It dried up my skin (I was so oily!) and that stopped the acne from popping out. It did also dry up my lips, unfortunately, but that's nothing compared to getting good skin after months of battling painful, pus-filled pimples. I took it for about a year, and then stopped when my acne was visibly cleared. I still had pimples from time to time, but nothing too terrible. There was a point when it flared up again, but this time I chose to try antibiotics. Worked great, and then I switched to birth control because I felt the antibiotics stopped working.

In conclusion, Roaccutane is perfect for SEVERE acne, and my only regret was not seeing a derm sooner. I have crater scars now, which sucks, but at least there are no more new pimples. Roaccutane is pretty much the last step in battling acne, so if everything else fails, this will definitely work as it targets your oil glands. The only thing is that you can't be on it long term, but I can definitely say it does it job! Hope this helps. :)

I used accutane 10 years ago for about 6 months. I was on 60 mg a day 40 in the daytime and 20 at night. My skin was super dry and it cracked and peeled. My lips and eyeballs were also very dry but it cleared my cystic painful acne. I would do it all over again. I started suffering from horrible acne since I was about ten years old and it was traumatizing. Accutane saved my life. It is a pain in the ass with the Dr. visits every month and blood tests and birth control, but my skin did a 180!!! Its worth it.

My friend used and it really worked on him. All through highschool he had Acne, he tried everything nothing worked, then he used that and the next time I saw him he look completely different, better, his mother said it made him moody, but other then that I don't think he had other side affects.

I think accutane is good. I've been on three cycles of it. Derms have to try all other avenues before they put you on it. Yes, there's side effects but I think it's worth it.
Side effects are dry skin, lips, nose which you will get and you learn to tolerate it. Joint pain was a big one for me. Typically, they based the number of months you're on it by your size and other criteria. Yes, you take blood tests and you have to log into a website every month and answer some easy questions before they let you get your prescription. Do not get pregnant on it. Major side effects with abnormalities in babies. I say do it, it's worth it. Also, check to see if you are allergic to anything. See a nutritionist and have a nutritional profile done too. Sometimes too much of a yeast build up or bacteria buildup. Also, watch starchy foods..pasta, rice, wine, sugary foods etc. Some doctors say foods don't matter. Totally not true.

I'm on my second month of taking it now - dry lips and back pain are the worst ones for me! I've also been getting dry eyes which is a pain because I wear contact lenses.
