I always get complimented on how clear my skin is, but I literally went through hell and back for a whole year trying to resolve having Acne and also suffering from Tinea Versicolor, and Keratosis Pilaris.

I had acne on my face mildly and it was just mostly whiteheads and papules that occured in random crazy breakouts that could not be treated with any kind of SA or BP treatment. In fact, if I used these products, the acne would end up worsening. Differin topical gel was perscribed to me, and ended up clearing away all of my acne with the help of cetaphil products, and my skin has been super clear minus your breakout every now and then.

As far as tinea versicolor goes, I began noticing discoloration in my skin from tanning, and at first it didn't alarm me as friends had told me they developed them too after tanning, but after awhile the spots of discoloration became extremely noticeable and I had to stop tanning and wear long sleeves. My dermatologists put me on an antifungal medicine(gross) and advised me to wash my skin with Selsun Blue Dandruff Shampoo for a week and then only 1-2 a week following that, and the discoloration went away in about a month or two.

Keratosis Pilaris, is a condition of extremely dry patches of skin, and I sufferred from this on the back of my arms. Scrubbing would make it worse, it always became worse in winter, and made it extrememly hard to wear short sleeves as I was embarassed people would see it. I ended up getting perscribed a special compound lotion and also recommended me to use AmLactin lotion, which also really helped clear up the condition and restore my skin back to a more natural state.

I know this was kind of long, but I think it's calming to know that other people suffer from similar things. I also think it's nice to know how they overcame these obstacles!

What skin conditions have you suffered from previously?
How did it affect your self-image?
What did you do to treat it?

Tinea Versicolor -

I currently have something (I don't know what yet!) but I have been putting off going to a derm. I really should, though! I have very dry and discolored patches on my stomach and also under my arms on both sides. I had already been diagnosed a few years back with having seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were the same or something similar. I used to use Nizoral shampoo for my scalp which worked really really well...but apparently they moved their manufacturing plant and are still awaiting to be re-approved by the FDA again, so I haven't been able to find it in drugstores for months =( At any rate, I didn't want to wear a bathing suit all summer because of it...its so embarrassing! I can't wait until its treated and goes away...I really gotta make that derm appt!

My embarrassing skin condition? I'm always breaking out....on my back! I'm still in the "overcoming" stage, so we'll see how it goes. But I do have to thank you so very much for your post. My daughter has Tina Versicolor and our doctor had her use an anti-fungal wash but it never did clear up. Her's is on her belly and she's embarrassed by it. I'm going to have her use Selsun Blue and see how that goes.

Again Cameron, thanks for sharing.

I've always have pretty clear skin except for a few blemishes. But recently I developed a rash/hives. :( I am so self conscious about it! I used to be so confident and could leave the house with no makeup...now I have to cover those spots up! Anyone with completely clear skin should never take it for granted! I had a little bit of blemishes on the sides of my mouth and used an apple/cinnamon scrub from mark as a spot treatment over night. Boy was that a big mistake! It burned my skin and made the spots I tried to treat big red circles! I have been applying aloe vera straight from the plant and it seems to be drying it up slowly. Any more suggestions on how to treat it? I really would appreciate them!

@Alexandra I have an issue with hives, too, but not on my face...I usually get them all over my legs especially if I take a hot shower. I actually have to take allergy medicine everyday or I'll break out in itchy hives! I'm not sure if what you have is related to an allergic reaction at all, but that could be a possibility, especially if they are itchy.

They are a little itchy...especially when I put aloe vera on them.

I suffered from acne for like 5 or 6 years. In the end of the last year or at the beginning of this year (Idk when exactly haha) I started taking the pill (do you say it like that?) well and my skin improved SO much! First I had those ugly acne scars all over my face, mostly my cheeks but when I went to a dermatologist he gave me some application and now you can't really see them anymore. However because of this application I had some weird very very dry spots in my face, you couldn't see them, I just felt it and it felt really bad and disgusting, but I applied it on my face though. When I stopped with it the dry spots disappeared and my acne scars have vanished. I'm so glad that I don't have acne anymore, but I'm still so afraid that I will wake up one day and it all will be back, I even had nightmares about that D:
