There are actually a lot of brands that test on animals... kinda sad!! Yet there are a lot that dont!! I am currently really trying to buy from brands that DO NOT test on animals. It used Peta for a lot of my information.

Ugh, PETA. Sorry, but I trust them as far as I can throw them...which is not very far.
Anyway, CoverGirl is owned by P&G (Procter & Gamble), and they're pretty notorious for animal testing, supposedly.

From the Leaping Bunny website:
"By 1996, ‘cruelty-free’ shopping had become popular, but it was also confusing, sometimes misleading, and ultimately frustrating. Companies had begun designing their own bunny logos, abiding by their own definition of ‘cruelty-free’ or ‘animal friendly’ without the participation of animal protection groups.
In response, eight national animal protection groups banded together to form the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC). The CCIC promotes a single comprehensive standard and an internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo. We are working with companies to help make shopping for animal-friendly products easier and more trustworthy."

Hmm. Tricky subject. But from my own research (yeah, not exactly academic-level, but I tried to read up a lot on it), some of these companies that claim to NOT test on animals are already using ingredients that were deemed safe by earlier tests conducted on animals.
That means they're now using the same ingredients, benefiting from the animal testing and still can make it look like they're "kind" to animals.

Loreal owns Lancome, which means Lancome tests on animals as well.

Shelly T.
Not necessarily. L'Oreal also owns The Body Shop, IIRC, and The Body Shop has a staunch anti-animal testing policy. Similar predicament with NARS: They're owned by a company that tests on animals (can't remember which one), but Francois Nars was, and is, very much against it.
Another thing to note: By 2013, animal testing will be banned in the EU.

Well, from what I've read, Lancome does test on animals.

I try my best not to use products that are tested on animals, so I always look at the labels. If it says something to the effect of "no animal testing," then I'm more likely to buy it. If it says something like "finished product not tested on animals," that's a little more sketchy. (Laura Mercier products say that, I think.) It basically means that the ingredients can be tested on animals but not the final product. Bleh!
Brands I know that don't test on animals: MAC, Urban Decay, NARS, Tarte, Kat Von D, Make Up For Ever, Too Faced, Clinique, Stila, Sephora Brand makeup and Ulta Brand makeup.

I try to greatly avoid purchasing products that test on animals, in fact I'm 99% sure I don't use anything that does test on animals, only one is question is NYX.. does anyone know? I'm a vegetarian so it's a very touchy subject. I have used PETA multiple times as resources for who does and does not test or use animal based products, etc. I know PETA can be a little outrageous at times but they can provide very resourceful information and save you a lot of time in searching on your own. If it weren't for PETA I would have not found out that McDonald's fries their french fries in beef stock making them not vegetarian friendly. This lead me to finding out where fries are actually safe to eat. Most places use beef stock or an animal product of some sort and fry in the same friers as the meat. Not to go off topic, just saying PETA can be helpful if you need lists or resources!
Just found out NYX is cruelty free, the cute little bunny logo is on their website!

NYX does not test on animals.

In Europe brands according to the new amendment from the EU in 2007 cosmetics made in Europe are not allowed to test on animals thats why I am not sure I can trust PETA about Lancome or Armani because if they are made in europe they are not testing cause they not only get fined the 1st time but a second time the company can get shut down.

Aisling P.
Isn't MAC also not Cruelty free because it is owned by Estée Lauder? (I'm not 100% sure on that)
I don't really trust the PETA list, I have to research myself. since PETA doesn't seem to include their parent companies that DO test on animals.
Jun 19, 2011
Nadia N.
MAC is cruelty free they even have advertised but I so agree with @AislingP @ShellyT about PETA they seem to lump everyone into one group if a company is owned by a bigger company that does they automatically lump them into the testing catagory

I am currently only buying products that DO NOT test on animals... it's all about research really... because while a smaller company may not test their parent company may. It's what matters to you and can get a little hard... Johnson and Johnson and Proctor&Gamble and Lancome/Loreal all test on Animal and those are huge companies.

This might be a really dumb question but what exactly does it mean when they test on animals? Like... put lipstick on a rabbit? haha

@Aisling: I'm pretty sure Estee Lauder *doesn't* test on animals.
Last fall, Sam from Pixiwoo started keeping a list in regards to who tests and who doesn't...
http://pixiwoo.blogspot.com/2010/09/update.html
She also has a post up regarding L'Oreal. She contacted them about their animal testing policy. They said they've not tested since 1989; yet, they're still on PETA's list. (Again: Ugh, PETA.) One of the commenters, someone who's worked in pharmeceutical and cosmetic research for the last ten years or so and has worked with a company who's worked with L'Oreal, said that to her knowledge, L'Oreal doesn't test on animals. Another commenter later said that they test only *new* ingredients on animals, but other than that, they've not engaged in testing since 1989.
http://pixiwoo.blogspot.com/2010/09/whats-deal-with-loreal-and-animal.html
Meanwhile, I'll also add Hard Candy to the "don't test" list.

Kayla, I'm not sure exactly, but I think they test the chemicals used in makeup products. So they actually might do something like put chemicals in rabbits' eyes (which could make them blind).
I try to avoid products that test on animals. I feel like most high end brands/good makeup products don't test and it's mostly drugstore makeup brands that do.

one of the youtube gurus i follow is also against animal testing and uses cruelty free, mostly vegan, products. her handle is cosmeticcouturier. i trust that she knows her stuff on the animal testing front, so it may be good guru for ya'll to follow if you're doing only cruelty free. I haven't banned non-cruelty free companies from my makeup stock due to price (i just can't buy all high end) but I tend to buy cruelty free over companies that test on animals. urban decay is cruelty free as is tarte, nyx, too faced, milani, wet n wild, etc...

what about drug store make-up?
Jan 5, 2012

Drugstore that tests on animals: Cover Girl, Loreal, Maybelline, Rimmel, uhm... a lot, ha. Wet n' Wild, Milani, Revlon, Almay, Jordana don't... NYX doesn't either..
