My hair is a darkish brown and I dip dyed it red. It did show up quite good considering the shade of my hair. When I did this I used red food colouring and red cordial (the flavouring stuff in the packets) it might be harder for you since your hair is layered though. But all you have to do is get a pan and heat it on the element, pour in some water and cordial and mix it with a stainless steel spoon, next put in a few drops of food colouring and mix, then put the mixture in a small plastic cup and fill to about half way ( depending how much you want died ) tie your hair back in a ponytail and place your hair in the cup, leave it in for about 10-15 mins. When finished, pat it dry with a few paper towels and then wrap some around your hair to stop it staining your clothes. You will need to sleep with it in to help it stay in longer. If the colour is not vibrant enough, repeat this. I hope it works for you and feel free to ask anymore questions :)

When I dip dyed my sisters hair, I put the hair I didn't want coloured in a bun, then with the bottom layers I painted on the colour using a hair dying brush & bowl, then wrapped each section in glad wrap as I went (3 wraps per section of hair - right, middle, left)
After I'd finished I just left it for 25 minutes and it was all done.
If you're looking for a vibrant colour then use Fudge Paintbox. Be sure to use a hair protectant cream after aswell.
