Personally I don't like shimmery highlights so I just use a foundation powder that is lighter than my skin tone.

It looks good. But if you don't feel comfortable with how "bright" it is, after you highlight put some of your face powder on top of it. It'll tone it down some. Also if you want you can always use concealer a shade or 2 lighter than your skin tone instead of going so light.
