I would like relatively thick hair without the damaging effects of backcombing.

Try redken thickening mousse. Look on the website- redken.com to find it at a salon near you. I have not tried the product yet but I read about it in an issue if Seventeen Magazine.

Are you looking for volume? Because there is no topical way to change the texture or amount of your hair unless you try a supplement. But if you are looking for volume, definitely don't put conditioner on your roots..do the tips of your hair up about to your chin-level, this should help give volume around the roots. Then when you get out of the shower, flip your head upside down and use volumizing mousse and start at the roots of your hair and work down; then do your normal hair routine. After you've styled your hair, flip your head over again and using a light-formula hairspray, spritz the roots of your hair, this should help seal the volume throughout the day.

Let me know if this is what you are looking for or what!

I've been using Nioxin Diamax treatment, and it makes my hair look and feel thicker. I wash my hair about every 3 days, and the thickness lasts the whole time.
