I'm about to colour my hair... I heard years ago to never colour clean hair as it doesn't hold the dye opinions please.

Unwashed is better as the natural oils can work as a buffer against skin irritation

The natural oils in your hair do act as a barrier for skin irritation, but slightly dirty hair also helps grab the color easier. So definitely unwashed.

It depends on what type of dye you are using. If you are using a permanent dye (boxed color/hair dye with a developer & colorant), the hair should be unwashed. That helps to protect the hair and scalp from excessive damage. But, clean hair absorbs non-permanent dyes much better than unwashed hair.

A day or two of unwashed is fine but longer than that is not good. Ppl come into the salon with a weeks worth of dirt and dry as hell ends and the color may take slightly uneven. As a professional I've been through classes and many of the brands say to apply on clean dry hair. I think ppl get too carried away on how dirty they let their hair get before dye. I know you'll get best results wash the day before.
