Some get free products, some get paid by YouTube and some just apparently have very good jobs lol.
I've also noticed that sometimes they're old makeup, like pallets from a few years ago so they've been building they're collections for a while

I was wondering the same thing! I'm working towards becoming a YouTube beauty guru and I'm faced with building my collection first. I think it's kinda sad that I feel like I can't become a guru unless I have a collection full of popular items and high end comestics. But I've found a couple ways to help me out.
1. I subscribed to Michelle's company ipsy.com it's a $10 monthly beauty subscription that sends out name brand 5 full or sample sized cosmetics. That way I get more bang for my buck. There is a waiting list though!
2. Go to outlet malls that have cosmetic stores. I'm making a trip to Ellington Outlet Mall soon to visit the Cosmetic Company Store. They sell discounted high end cosmetics

I don't have an amazing job. I probably make like 50k a year grosse pay, I have a son, a dog who requires prescription diet dog food for his skin allergies which is definitely not cheap, and my regular monthly bills including car payments and what not
...if you budget correctly you can afford whatever you want. a lot of people I work with don't understand how I afford the things I buy cause I buy A LOT lol but they are all making around the same as me so I don't understand how they CAN't afford the things they want. it doesn't make much sense if you follow your budget each month

Mac is the same internationally. I just spent a bunch in pesos when I went to the DR because, mac is a luxury brand there, same pricing and they don't take pro cards.

Most gurus, I know, have built their kits for years. Which I'm sure means they haven't thrown away their makeup hygeinic ally lol
But a lot of companies will give top tier bloggers and youtubers free product in exchange for review- but don't think that goes for every "guru" you see. As more people start blogs the competition gets stiffer and you need to have a LOT of followers to get free product. Unless you hound companies.

There are a few sites you can join that give free product to smaller bloggers, but not high name brands.

Also, I've been unemployed for about 8 months and I make due and am able to keep stocking my MUA it. So it's possible to do if you budget wisely.

A Mac lipstick isn't that expensive when you look at a revlon lipgloss costing 13-14 - for a dollar more I'd rather get the brand name and the quality.

Mac is much more expensive where I live, a lipstick is $18 without tax. Eyeshadow pans are $15, eyeshadow pots are $18. And where I love in Edmonton, we have the tourist mall and it's $22 for a lipstick and eyeshadow pot, 18$ for a eyeshadow pan since there's so much tourism they can rack the prices up.

States is sooo much cheaper for Mac makeup. Which is stupid since it originated in Canada and was bought by the us lol.

I've never heard of their prices being that much everywhere I've traveled it's converted to the American prices.. Give or take.

I guess it's just the currency to the American dollar converted.

Omg yes. Thank you.

That's what I thought too, that is was just converted but there's times where the Canadian dollar is higher than the states dollar or very similar and the prices don't go down at all. Converting it into American dollar still makes it a $3+ difference. Everything is pricier in Canada though.

MAC has a pro card that licensed beautician can join, pay a yearly fee and get up to 40% off their purchase. A lot of the youtubers you see do pay full price, but other have the MAC pro card or get them for free :)

I'm not a YouTuber but I'm a beauty blogger at Projectvanity.com. I've been doing it for about five years now and when I started out I had only a few things - wasn't rich, either! But as more people started reading my blog, more brands started supporting it, and over the years I was able to build a sizeable collection. Some brands would give whole collections, or send something new every month.

Not bragging or anything, just wanted to give you guys an idea of how the beauty blogging/ vlogging works. It took me years to break through but I imagine it's so much faster for YouTube gurus to get more brands to sponsor them.

Use eBay? There are lots of cheap quality brands too like ELF or MUA.

Mac is friken expensive in Australia too! I've watched a few YouTube videos and people with heapsss of makeup have been collecting them over the years so it's just built up!

Jennifer is right! MAC is a lot more expensive here than in the us, my nan goes on hols there a lot and everytime she goes I get her to stock up on all my make-up, it costs at least half the price I would pay in total here! It's a lot cheaper in the us compared to aus, but I can't speak for Europe or anyway else!! :)
