Hey ladies. So I'm starting school in January at a community college. I had to wait a whole semester due to my daughters birth this past summer. I was just wondering if any of yall have studied cosmetology at a community college before? If so how was it? Thanks in advance!

I did and it was amazing! Not all schools are created equal so ask about their retention and completion rates. Not all states provide the schools with passing rate info but they can usually give you a ball park number.
By far the best thing about a CC over a private school is the experience of the instructors. It is much harder to become an instructor for a public institution than a private. I feel my training was much more hands on than friends who went to private schools.
Private schools can hook you up with great jobs but I feel the depth of education is better at a CC. Really the most important thing about cos. school is taking full advantage of the knowledge you are being given and put it towards landing that top assistant job.
Good luck!

I went and completed my cosmetology operator's liscense at a CC, and I must say it was the best decision I could've made. Like Dina said above, you really get a more in depth experience because you have to show credentials to educate at a public school. One of my instructors was also a test administrator here in Texas, which was even better. She made sure we had the correct knowledge and tools to pass board the first time around. Not only that, some CC's (mine did) have an Associate of Applied Science degree program that you can attain WHILE taking your cosmo classes as well.
Not to mention, the cost. Finanical aid covered 100% of my tuition for all 1500 hours worth of school, plus books and my kit. I even had financial aid money left over. Whereas a private school will cost you at least 20 grand off top. It was an easy decision for me. Sure you will get more connects through a private school, but at the end of the day knowledge and hands on training is what's important.

I did it at a technical school and it was awesome! so much to learn but just always keep pressing forward to your dreams..you learn the majority of it after you get hands on experience outside of school..its possible..I'm 23 and I'm getting into doing runway hair and makeup in fashion shows...also network..that will help because no matter the schooling everything you will learn is by practice:)

Also they can pay for you because you have a daughter..

I went to a technical school. I got a grant to cover tuition and books but I had to cover my own kit and scrubs. I enjoyed all my 1000 hours there. I still miss it!! Take pictures of all your work and save them in a folder.
