I personally do *not* recommend doing your own colour unless you know what you're doing/have done it successfully before. IMO, there are just too many question marks, and I don't recommend taking that risk.
Call a local salon. Get a consultation with a colourist. (Consults are generally free, I do believe.) Ask them questions. Tell them what hair colour you'd like to achieve, find out which shade best suits you, and what it will take to achieve it and what the maintenance will be. They're going to ask you if you've coloured your hair before (as I understand it, previously-coloured hair will respond differently to colour than hair that hasn't been coloured before).
