I really want to dye my hair like a dark brown but I don't want to if it's going to make my hair look like crap. But I'm not sure if we can afford I go to the salon. What should I do?

As long as you're dying your hair one, solid color, it should be fairly simple! If you want to go dark brown, I would definitely start with a lighter brown than you really want to go. Back in high school, a lot of girls would come into school with almost black, and very unnatural looking hair. They would buy a "dark brown" dye and it would turn their blonde or lighter/medium brown hair almost black. If you get a boxed dye or if you pick up dye and developer from Sally's, the directions on the box are pretty easy to follow and have never caused me any problems. You should definitely do a little research on the internet, but the directions are pretty straight forward. I just cannot stress not going too dark enough. You can always pick up a darker dye if it doesn't come out dark enough for your liking, but lightening the hair is a nightmare. good luck!

Yes, go for it! you can't go wrong with dark brown. Make sure you wear an ugly shirt because it will drip & stain your shirt, and use a comb after you applied the dye, just to be sure you don't miss any areas & it comes out even. Post a pic when your done so we can see how it turned out, if thats ok with you :-)
