I need help. I don't know much about hair besides how to style it.
I want to dye my hair a dark blonde. right now it's a dark brown. almost black. do I absolutely have to bleach it in order to go blonde? Or can I just dye it shade by shade? I've never bleached my hair before so I'm kind of scared to do so since I've heard so much negative things about it.

Please please don't bleach your hair, it has long term effects. Not only will your hair most likely be a weird orangey hue after the first bleach, but it will also be very dry. I processed my hair with bleach twice and a small chunk at the bottom came off 😱 it's funny now, but it wasn't then. My recommendation would be going to a professional, they can pack your hair with tons of proteins and lighten you up in stages :)

It,s quite risky to bleach at home, you may have some lucky, but the result is very unforeseeable.
Your actual level is about 2-3, you want smth about 7-6, so there are not less than 3 levels to be lifted. It,s very much. Without strong knowledge it,a a dead sentence for hair. Of course you can do this as you,ve said - level by level, but you may get an uneven result at home.
On my opinion the best option is to get highlights more times, and the final color would be more vibrant:-)

Well I was going to see a professional regardless. I wasn't planning on doing it at home. I'm just not sure about the actual bleaching process and how it will affect my hair. but thank you guys! I think I'll take your advice Taylor and have them lighten it in stages. I don't want my hair to fall off lol
thanks ladies! xoxo

You'll have to bleach it if you want to go any shade of blonde. And even if you do go to a professional, maintaining that color is A LOT of work. It's going to require special shampoos and products to keep it from looking brassy and from being dry. I was bleach blonde for an entire year and here I am a year, almost 2 later still growing my hair out. Just make sure you really want it and have the money for regular salon visits and some good products. Being blonde can be really fun if you are able to put the time and money in for it to look good. Unfortunately, I was broke and in college so I was doing mine on my own and it didn't look the best it could have. Good luck!

Thank you Caitlin! I didn't even know I had to use special shampoo. I was planning on using regular shampoo (pantene is what I use at the moment)
Is there a kind you recommend? I know nothing about this stuff lol

When I was blonde, I,ve used Schwarzkopf "blonde me" it,s a line designed for blonde in cold/warm/natural tints. But a lot of brands have such products. I think you can use a common shampoo, just sometimes a tinted one to prevent or get rid of green/ yellow etc.shade.
