Having A Career In Makeup

Hey everyone !
Just wondering what's the first step to be a makeup artist. I have a passion for makeup but unsure about it cos I have never tried it. I'm more interested in the runway makeup artist or even film/video part.
Is a makeup school a definite option ? Or is there anything else? And what are the pros and cons of this career? Thank you so much - I'm so confused what to do ! If there are makeup artists out there - it'll be great to hear your advice!!
