Here is a link that explains the difference: http://www.diffen.com/difference/Acrylic_Nails_vs_Gel_Nails
Personally, I use gel polish instead of traditional polish on my natural nails because it lasts much longer. However, if I wanted to lengthen my nails instead I'd go for acrylic because it's more durable and just do a gel coat on top for shine. It is possible to lengthen nails using gel but it's a more involved process. The result is more pliable and natural feeling than acrylic.

Something I just want to add, with most gel nails they have to be cured with a UV light and acrylics just dry on their own.
