I use lighter powder and a highlighting powder with shimmer on my cheeks. Some use concealer that like 2 shades lighter.

Highlighters come in all kinds of textures. There's powder, cream and liquid Etc. I find it easiest to use powder as it requires the least amount of blending. I use the Balms Mary-louminizer and a fan brush and put it on my cheekbones, center of my forehead, bridge of my nose and my Cupid's bow (middle of the upper lip)

It's porpoise is to highlight the high points on your face. Like above your cheek bones (above where you put our blush) the bridge of your nose, etc. and most people use a light shimmery color like ( a shimmery white eyeshadow would work) and you could use a highlighting brush of course, a contouring brush and even your clean fingers I would imagine :) I hope I helped some
