I think you're friend should have something like a dark auburn ombré. And I don't think that it would damage her hair just because she dyed it auburn.

I have naturally wavy/curly hair and I've dyed my hair 3 times this year, and it's still curly ish :) her hair won't get damaged too badly after dying it once. The color you suggested would look good on her :)
