Don't go out too early, and like velen said, wear hats.

They have water proof spray on sun block you can swim and it stays on just reapply after you get out.

I was in Panama earlier this year for work, got second degree sunburn, found out after that no matter what all sunscreen loses its effectiveness after about 40 minutes, so reapply often, the more often the better, also the spray on varieties have a tendency to miss a lot of areas, so if you use that make sure you spray and them rub to spread it out.

A few years ago I had two moles removed that my doctor said 6 more months if not sooner, they would have been diagnosing me with melanoma. The moles were in the process of cell mutation when they biopsied. (Ironic thing: the two moles with the mutations were not the moles I initially went tin for, those ones came back healthy) bottom line, I avoid the sun like the plague. Like Kelly said, all sunscreen looses it's barrier around 40 minutes. Here's some things I do while outside, even in the winter time!
-apply sunscreen all over my body before getting dressed (clothe move while you do, and you can buy sunscreen that has nice smells not that sunscreen smell) my bottom layer of sunscreen is usually SPF 15
-10 minutes before I go out ill put a but load of baby sunscreen SPF 65 all over open skin and a few inches under shirt sleeves.
-set an alarm on my phone for 30 minutes to reapply (I usually forget or get caught up and busy)
-wear those cute big floppy hats and big sunglasses
-stay in the shade!!
-try and avoid outside between 11 and 3
-good luck and try not to stress to much!! It's the sun and you can't fully avoid it! Just do your best to protect your skin and have fun!

I also get tan super easily so I avoid the sun like crazy. Lots of sunscreen, applying it often, I also cover up! I'll wear long sleeves and a hat or cover my entire body with a towel if my friends are laying out.
