I just started my own blog so I know where you are coming from!
I think a nice clean layout is really nice and it always catches my eye. I'm not a big fan of heavy graphics/loud colors, etc. but then again some people are.
I would totally check out your blog!

I run a music blog and I agree with everyone here that a simple theme does offer a level of professionalism, and a way to let your personality shine. Also research your topic in case your readers are not aware of what you're talking about. Being honest does pay off. A lot of people may not agree with you, but that's okay. Just be aware that it will happen at some point. And share, share, share. I hoped that helped you a bit. Sometimes it just takes another perspective to help get your ideas out.
