Toner is what takes the brassy color out and lightens it... That's what was how my hair got almost white in certain areas (plus 2 boxes of bleach)

I used the 40 volume developer and 2 of their purple powders, but my hair is naturally black and doesn't take bleaching well... This is actually the most I've ever bleached my hair.. It's in rough condition

Oohh ok at michele. ty. then how do I get it a lil darker? the rest of my hair is fine and not anywhere near as bold or blonde as the streak in my bangs which is kinda what I wanted. I'm just nt used to blonde whatsoever. where the blonde streak is is actually a goin grey streak. weird but true. been collecting white hairs in that one spot slowly for past nine years.

You should probably go with a 10v developer when using toner, maybe even a 5v because you only want to deposit pigment, not lift it.

Ah ok thanks gen that's very helpful.

Def ten volume or lower. I am an expert. Toner is a semi permanent or deposit only color. For every ten volume you lighten another level. You want to only deposit not lift any lighter. And to tone down gold a bit I would use its opposite color which is v or violet. If you stay at around a 7 or 8 it'll still hold some of that caramel color. Good luck!!

Ok ty bunches mary but could you elaborate a lil more on what exactly a 7 or 8 is. I guess more specifically what do I walk into sallys and get or tell them what I want?
Dec 13, 2013
Mary T.
7/8 is the level of color darkness. It's hard to tell but it looks like you have the rest of your hair around a six. So I'm not sure but I'm guessing you want the hl lighter than the rest of your hair. A level 7 is a dark blonde and it will blend in pretty well an 8 is med blonde and will stand out a lil more. I would go in and ask them to show you a 7 and 8 semi permanent color with violet and or neutral tones and choose from there. A semi perm should only have one kind of developer and it's usually 10 or under. Does that help?

A level 20 will get it there it's just you don't need to lift the hair an extra level when going darker. It will cause it to be more porous and porous hair doesn't hold color well in the long run. By saying expert I meant I'm licensed too. Just foolin around😜. Color has always been one of my strong points.

Thank you soooo much velen and mary. you both have been more than helpful. one last question. its going to be impossible to get just the highlighted pieces because they are so thin and more natural looking and not just on top unless I just do bang section so if I put the toner all over it will darken my unbleached hair to what shade? if I go with a 10 volume and a level 7? and fyi the rest of my hair is natural color and not already dyed. I'm ok with rest going darker but will it be permanent n have to basically grow out?
