Hiya,I had the same problem for ages so here is what I learned...
-If you use heat a lot try not to,(try to use it only on special occasions) Besides you can get curls without heat and there is a few ways on straightening hair without heat too! (Tutorials are on youtube)
-use a wide tooth comb..this helps to prevent breakage and works through tangles easier.
-Take supplements such as Folic acid and biotin.
-Do protein masks once a month to do this I use 'ORS Hair Mayonnaise' its not really mayonnaise! Don't do the treatments more than twice a month because it can leave to more breakage.
-Do regular conditioning masks..I use the TRESemme keratin smooth!! AMAZING stuff..leaves your hair extremely soft.As well as getting moisture from this product you get keratin which is what your hair is made from and is the basic building block to any hair growth.
Regular trims...ok,I know it doesn't make sense to cut your hair when your trying to grow it but as long as you don't cut it often your fine..cutting will take split ends away which can leave to breakage as they can lead to further problems in the future :) only 1/4 every 3 months...
There is so much I could talk about like the green house effect and the inversion...but its complicated so have a look on youtube :)
I'm sorry this is long lol hairs complex!!
P.S hair is made from moisture, protein and keratin so concentrate on balancing these.
