Hey ladies. I really want to get my sternum pierced. I have my ears done (4 in one 3 in the other) and nose. I used to have my navel and labret done. I took my navel out while I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, and took my Labret out because of family. Now I'm going in to get my navel pierced again, but I also want to et t sternum done. I've been wanting it since I was in grade 10, like 9 years now. And I was wondering about your experiences with dermals and surface. Which do you have, or prefer, which one hurts more, or heals quicker. Things like that. I have done some research, like "dermals have a 2% rejection rate.." But I could find a rejection rate for surface. Another thing I'm taking into consideration is removal, and remaining scar tissue.

Any help and advice is welcomed :) thanks ladies!!

I have/had 2 dermals in my chest. One never healed correctly and after 2 years it finally rejected. It left a small scar but I put lots of vitamin e on it to try and heal the scar. The other one is still in and going strong but I do look a bit lopsided. It hurts obviously. It's a piercing. But nothing you wouldn't be able to handle. But actually dermals have a much higher rejection rate than 2% and are actually considered a temporary piercing.

Thank you Lyndsay for replying. I've posted a few times and no one has answered me :( I read about the rejection rate on a studios website. And I was under the assumption dermals were more permanent because they are implants. I'm just so confused as to what to do... All I know is I want it pierced. Haha.

Definitely go with dermals. Surface piercings are more inclined to reject. Dermals are made of titanium so they have a lower rejection rate. Of course some will reject regardless, its a foreign object in your body.I've had my chest done and my wrists done. They looked really awesome but the ones on my chest got annoying because of my seatbelt...it would get in the way and I have really long wavy hair and they would get tangled...so I pulled them out with pliers. Didn't leave a mark at all...when I got my wrist pierced the right one healed perfectly but the left one didn't heal right and came out after two months...so I did it again and it did the same thing. I recently pulled the right wrist dermal out as well because it looked weird with just one. Ignore my industrial but thats when I got my left redone.

That's when it rejected...

please make sure the place you're getting it won't be in the way of everyday life...like seatbelt placement, length of hair, if you have children that will yank them, your jobs views on them before getting them.

I have had one on my sternum for two years and a half, it was practically painless and easy to heal. problem is they have draining issues so mine gets swollen and oozes every 6 months or so. You have to be very carefull to avoid pulling on it. When you get it pierced make sure the piercer places the dermal on a low risk/low movement area.
I work at a piercing/tattoo studio so if yoy have more specific questions about procedure, scarring, removal, etc, let me know!

Oh and as far as rejection rate for a surface piercing, provided its done with correct procedure and jewerly, and it heals properly, it would only last for max 9 months.
I had two dermal anchors on my stomach and I got them removed because of my pregnancy, it does not hurt and scarring is minimal, it looks like this after 1 month since I got them removed

I would say go with a dermal. Surface piercings almost always migrate or reject.

Thanks Elizabeth for the reply :) I heard that the first week dermals can fall out.. Is that true as well?

The first week some pierces advise to put a band aid over it to apply pressure on it, but its just to prevent it from getting caught and interfering with the healing process
as for it falling out, yes and no. Yes it can fall out if you have improper jewerly. proper dermal anchor jewerly has holes on it so your skin grows through them and makes it stay in place, while cheap one is a flat heel which could make it slip out. If you decide to get it done make sure your piece looks like this (one small heel, a larger heel and holes through one or both heels or sides of the jewerly) and chose a smaller top to prevent extra tension on your skin

This was right after mine came out. My hair got caught on it all the time but it also had some "crust" under the skin which was making it so the scar tissue wasn't healing. I want to get it redone but I'm not sure if it will happen again. Does anyone know?

Dermals reject over time they don't stay permanently. The rejection rate is actually almost 50$

50%

Getting pierced under scar tissue will help lessen rejection because of the tough skin. My naval rejected twice and the 3rd time I got it behind all the scarring and its stayed amazingly
