Putting products on your hair before you style usually works better than just a finishing spray.
I sometimes put mousse or oil/serum on damp hair, mousse especially seems to help the hair feel much more manageable. Then just blowdry as usual and curl :)

That's what I do anyway :)

You could also section your hair into into 4-8 sections, scrunch the hair and use butterfly clamps to clip the hair securely. I've been doing this while growing my hair to keep the ends healthy and it works well. It works even better on hair which has a natural wave to it.
