It could be many things. If its a foundation you've used many times before it could be your skins PH. You can balance out your skins PH by splashing either cool water ( not extremely cold ) onto your face. You can also use Raw Unfiltered Apple cider vinegar which balances your skins PH and acts as a toner.
You should prime your skin as well before applying foundation.
Another reason could be that you picked the wrong foundation. Remember there are three types of skin tones. Warm, cool , and neutral. This can affect the outcome of your foundations color. Make sure you know what skin type you have before purchasing foundation. Certain brands, like L'oreal for instance, labels their foundation under Warm, Neutrals and cool.
It is important to understand that your skin and your foundation both affect the outcome. If you have dry skin you should use a moisturizing foundation. Yves Saint Laurent does well for dry skin. If a foundation is labeled as ' Long lasting ' it well dry out later through out the day. I recommend reading even the box your foundation comes in. I purchased a foundation that did well as soon as I applied it. It would dry out through out the day and freak me out. When I put it back in the box to return it , on the side of the box it literally read in tiny letters 'For oily skin types '. After I went to Sephora I looked at the bottle, the stand , everything. The only thing labeling it for oily skin was the tiny letters at the very bottom on the side. So make sure when you purchase a foundation that its associated to your skin type.

Try maybe a stippling brush for an even coverage? I use the real techniques expert face brush and it's amazing! If it's going orange you probably have the wrong shade of foundation, when purchasing a new foundation be sure to test it out, and if it's a high end foundation you're buying there's usually a beauty specialist there who will help you find the right shade :)
