For contouring maybe try a matte eyeshadow. If you're pale like me then contouring products will most likely be too dark for your skin. I suggest NYX matte eyeshadow in "Taupe". For highlighting I suggest getting a foundation that is at least a couple shades lighter than your normal foundation. Also Benefit's Watts Up Highlighter is very good.

Products:
Highlight: use a liquid or cream foundation or concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone. (stay away from the shimmer highlight products until you get more advanced
Contour: matte and cool tone products darker than your skin, can be a foundation or concealer or matte bronzer
tip: if you use a liquid, always set it with a powder

Technique: go along with the chart Shauna posted.
Rule of thumb for basic contouring- think of your face as a heart with your brows at the arch of the brows. Inside of the heart should be lighter (not the whole nose just the bridge of the nose) and the outside of heart should be darker
