Be prepared to invest. A red shampoo/conditioner is a good place to start. Only wash in tepid-cold water and try to keep washing at a minimum. if you enjoy washing your hair every/every other day; it's not for you. Also touch ups. It can get brutal on your hair so I personally always have back-up semi permanent dye when I finally do begin to lose color. You'll also want to invest in a really good heat protection spray and use any hot tools as little as possible also.

It's a lot of work and can get expensive if you actually want to keep a vibrant red.

Red is the hardest color to keep in the hair, even natural red heads fade. Invest in a good shampoo and conditioner...

Wash every few days with cold water and use a good shampoo and conditioner. Check Aveda products. They have a line specifically for red hair.

I agree with Princess! Red hair is very expensive lol. I redye my hair 2x a month and bleach my roots every 4 weeks. I also do hot oil treatments and deep condition like crazy because of all the bleach. Maintenance is a pain but dry shampoo will become your best friend. Like other ladies said cold water always and try using a sulfate free shampoo :)

Princess said it all! And then Grace said the rest. Dry shampoo, sulfate free, wash once a week, cold water, hi maintenance. With funky colors it's redo time every two weeks and regular hair dye about once a month. And definitely lay off the hot tools and blow dryer, and all heat. no products with alcohol. Hairspray, gel ect. Not a color for the low maintenance types. I've had every color possible and I'm amazed I still have hair!

Try dying with Henna the color is vibrant and more natural looking for much longer.

@princess you are so right. I've seen individuals leaving the salon with beautiful red hair then washing their hair with Suave.

Omg Annmarie, I just died a little inside! That's like HEARTBREAKING lol.

A lot of girlies don't realize what they're getting into. I personally researched red hair for like a week straight and I'm SO glad I did because it's honestly lots of upkeep and it sounds funny but red hair is seriously like an investment.

Like Grace said, I too touch my hair up a couple times (with some Manic Panic) then the roots every 4-6 weeks depending on how yours grow in. And you also need to invest in a good deep conditioner and again as Grace said, hot oil treatments can be a blessing.

Then on top of a color depositing shampoo I have another that's sulfate and paraben free that I mix my color deposit with sometimes because it doesn't always feel clean enough with just the deposit. And dry shampoo is a MUST, especially if you go to the gym and stuff.

Ling story short, keeping up your deep/rich/vibrant red is like a part time job you pay to do hahah. :)

@Mary I'm right there with you girl, how I have so much hair after years if changing my mind and experimenting with it is like a miracle in itself! I think this red is the longest I've stuck with a color in forever, theb again I've never dumped so much money to keep it up! Now I know how men feel with high maintenance girls...I feel like I owe my man something,  bwhahahaha.

My stylist always used a demi permanent red as a base, then had me rinse and put the permanent red over the demi. It made my red last much longer.

Yeah that's why I use Manic Panic, it gives a really rich base without destroying your hair between the harsh dying, otherwise I'd probably have a head covered in red straw.
