You don't need it since your freelancing but it's recommended. You wouldn't want your hairstylist to not have any training. You should try to talk to a counselor and ask to be placed in a separate part of the training. Don't give up though if it's a passion of yours your troubles will be rewarded in the end.

You need to find out if applying makeup in your state/regiowithout a license is legal first. If it's not even with a contract you'll face legal action.

If not, you can totally teach yourself makeup if you practice. I was self taught and working a year before going to school, it looks better on paper tho.

Cosmetology, in my opinion,is more for hair nails.
But usually to work in a salon you usually need a license.

Lastly, freelancing is actually the term for working on and off with a brand or company without a permenant position. A makeup artist working for themselves is actually an independent contractor, a lot of people make that mistake. But in an interview they will ask who you freelance for.
