You can use other things instead of a dotter such as the ends of a bobby pin or a tooth pick but if you do nails frequently then a dotter would be fine btw they can be expensive

Personally they come very much in handy and if youre just starting to get familiar with them you can find some cheap ones on amazon but they're pretty good.

I used to use pens but I love my dotter. It's a lot easier to control the size of the dot and also I use it to apply rhinestones.
