So I've been coloring my hair black for at least a couple years now, and I like it but lately I've been wanting a big change. I really want to dye my hair a weird color again or even go closer to my natural color, which is a very ashy light brown. Unfortunately in order for me to do anything to my hair I'll have to lighten it like 5 shades. So I need some tips on lightening my dyed black hair while keeping it as healthy as possible. Thanks :)

Spray lemon juice on it and hang out under the sun a lot. Does wonders.

Put highlights to lighten your colour. Every month you can get another head if highlights. After you get your highlights by foils, you can tone the colour that you bleached. Make sure to do treatments to keep your hair moisturized because it can really dry out your hair.

The highlight idea that Kim mentioned is what everyone recommends. If you don't want to wait and you have healthy hair, try a bleach wash. It's more gentle than bleaching and should lift your color enough to dye it your desired color.

I had the exact same problem. So listen up (: use prell shampoo. It's a natural shampoo that will strip the color gradually. And have your hair dresser strip your hair with the best product possible. That's why nobody should ever dye their hair black because it will stain your hair and unfortunately I had to learn that the hard way. Good luck!

Don't do the lemon juice. Since it is so acidic, it can do strange things to hair when trying to recolor it. Highlights are great for subtle change over time with mineable damage. Bleach cap for an all over approach. Or a color lifter for a gentle approach. Just remember, you might have build up of the color more on the mid shafts and ends so they might not lift as much as you would like.
