Hi I'm a cosmetologist and a trained eyelash extensionist! I was trained using the NovaLash system so I can really only speak to the safety of that brand, other brands will have different formulas for their lash adhesive and may/may not be as safe.
Eyelash extensions can be great but the safest system in the world is only useful if the person applying them are good at their application. It will probably take the better part of 2 hours for a full set. The adhesive is medical grade, so long term there should be no reactions. If too much adhesive gets on your lashes it will bond them together, sometimes the tech will have to go in and separate your lashes multiple times. That might pinch a bit but nothing should ever be painful.
Do your research on the shop and the technician and you'll be fine.
Lash Extensions are individually glued to one of your natural lashes and when done properly, will stay glued to your lashes until it is their time to fall off- which is a natural part of the process. Eyelashes regenerate ore often then people think, and depending on the kinds of make up and facial products you use, the bonds of the glue can be broken down and the lashes separated.
They can be a great way to speed up your make up routine or to add a little more glamor to your look!
