When buying a foundation, does the foundation have to be the same shade as your face, or slightly darker?

When buying foundation, always match it to the color of your neck.. not your face

Your face gets to see the sun and your neck does not. even if it looks pale but matches your face. thats your color. besides thats what bronzer and blush are for. to give you back that flush.

So if I can't find a foundation that matches my neck, can I get a lighter color and apply bronzer all over my face to match my neck?

The color of your neck really matters if to dark leaves such a harsh line and if to light you look like a vampire go to Mac BEST FOUNDATION 👌👌👌🎀

I think that it also depends on how that particular foundation oxidizes when set into your skin. I'd ask the counter for a shade match and they'll apply it directly onto your face. It's good if you've the chance to go under direct sunlight to see how the foundation looks. :)

I try to match it with my neck the best I can. Ulta has samples for drugstore foundation if you prefer drugstore, but any high end brand will have assistants to help you pick a good match. A good match can be sometimes hard to find! I think however it's better to go a little too dark than too light, bc too light seems to stand out more.

Hi I'm a cosmetologist and theater trained make up artist. I agree with Jacqueline! I think its best to match your foundation to more than just the skin on your face, I personally use the skin just below the dip in my collar bone when considering a shade when I am tan. If you don't have a big color difference between your neck, face, chest area then go with the color that closest matches your face's skin. I recommend buying 3 (if you can)- one that matches your skin, one slightly lighter, one slightly darker. With these you can mix in something lighter/darker when you need it.
If you are unsure of what colors to get ask a make up counter girl to help you find them. If you go to an ulta or sephora and explain to them what you're looking for I'm sure they will be more than helpful. If you want the cheaper ones just be honest about it right away and I'm sure they will be glad to help.

When buying a foundation you should go one shade lighter than your face.
