Smokey Eye Help

So I LOVE darker eye makeup but I can't figure out how to make my bottom eye liner look more blended. Right now I make a thick, straight line all the way across the bottom. I use maybelline unstoppable eyeliner and everytime I try to smudge it, it just kinda comes off my eye. Girls, please help me out. Pictures are appreciated as well.

Line the waterline all the way, then use a smudge brush to smudge black eyeshadow, not liner, on the lower lashline. Eyeliner won't blend into the hazey, smokey look you're probably after.
