One way to do is tie your hair in a high pony tail the split in half, with the two halls keep doing notes in till it is the shape you want, with the left over pieces wrap around and pin into the bun :) and then your done!

I take my hair in a ponytail and split it in half. Then I divide each half in two, twisting the pieces. Then, I take hole of one piece and push the other down. (If you look up how to do a snakebraid and watch how they push it, it's the same concept.) bobby pin it and repeat with other side. I did a low one this morning. :)

I wouldn't use the donut if you want a messy bun.. For messy bun I would tie a high ponytail, take a small section tease the roots and then roll and pin in place of where you want it to be.. It could take you awhile to achieve it.. Or another way is just tease.. And wrap around and secure with bobbypins.. :) I hope it helps.
