Your hair is such a gorgeous chocolate color! My hair is kind of the same, but a bit darker, and I've always considered putting a deeper chocolate colored tint into it. You don't need to go with a different color, but just a deeper shade. This will give your hair great shine, create that "new" look that you want, and your roots won't look bad! Talk to your colorist about it, too

Once you color your hair... You can't go back. When permanent color molecules enter in your hair shaft they are there forever. (Hence permanent) so you will be left with only lifting (bleaching) to get any lighter later. I think you should try a Demi permanent color which will give you the same result but eventually (8-10 weeks) wash out. That way you can play with gold, copper, red, violet undertones without a serious commitment. Ask your stylist :)
