I usually take a qtip i dipped in rubbing alcohol and apply it directly to the cold sore, hold it down for about 30 secs... it stings but it kills the bacteria so it wont last as long. Also there is a prescription cream called Zovirax, it works better than Abreva in my opinion. So if you can get to a doc, ask about it! good luck!
