Pick an eye shadow that's just a couple shades lighter than your skin color. You can use one that's just a few shades darker for contouring, too. There are tons of different products out there but eyeshadow is usually cheaper, especially while you're learning. Also, check out the article posted a couple of days ago in the editorial section about highlighting. There were some good tips in there about luminizers for different skin colors. : )
