No, your foundation should match your skin undertone! I think she was just trying to make a sale.

I just went to an Estée Lauder counter and she tried a pink toned foundation on me and it looked great (because I have pink times as well)!and I asked if I could take home a sample and try it out since it matched great and I liked it. She said that actually the particular shade I liked would be discontinued so she had me take home a yellow based sample instead mainly just to see if I liked the foundation consistency. The yellow toned foundation that I sampled at home was awful. It looked really bad against my pink toned skin. I'm not a makeup expert or anything but just from my experience it seems better to match with your exact skin tone. Maybe she was doing it to try to counteract the pinkish color for you but at the same time your face has to match the rest or your upper body and usually if your face is pinkish then your chest, neck and shoulders are too
I would make sure it matches.

You foundation should match your skin close as possible, for me I like to go a shade darker, so instead of looking washed out, I have a natural glow.

The only time you'd really want an opposite is if you're trying to cancel out a discoloration such as if you have very blue under eye discoloration you may want to use some yellower concealer to cancel it out.

I do makeup for photographers in my area. I have been doing this for two years now and I'm constantly asking makeup questions to other makeup artist and I have never heard that. And I honestly don't know why someone would tell you that. Maybe she was confused.
