What type of camera and lighting are you using?

Don't use flash get some daylight lightbulbs and create an area of lighting that projects light from all angles then start taking pics :)

Flash isn't going to be your best friend unless you have a diffuser or a bounce, which I don't think they sell for phones. Honestly, make sure you're taking pictures from the back camera, not the front. If the lens is lined up with the center of the face normally that means you're in frame.

But if you're looking to start a portfolio I'd look into getting a cheap point and shoot so you can get better quality. As far as lighting goes natural is best, or faking it with photoshop or another photo editor.

I would invest in an digital camera. This is for your portfolio and it should look as professional as it can. When I take pictures of my makeup, I use an actual camera. It comes out true and easier to edit if I need to photoshop a bit. I notice when I take a pic with my phone it just looks so different.

Check out Black Friday if you want a good camera for a good price. I bought a Nikon camera (which retailed for $275) for $150.
