So I'm thinking of going to Cosmetology school to learn how to professionally do makeup as a side gig to my fulltime job. Is it worth it to go to 'school' for this or should I just learn it on my own and not pay for the licensed??

I didn't do that eye by the way, its a post from my IG.

Ahh yes @Vegas_Nay, she's awesome.

I would suggest it. I want to get a certificate. But only because I will have something to show people when they ask me if I'm certified or if I went to school. But you can definitely learn everything you need to know from watching tutorials and reading blogs.

I have a cosmetology license an a esthetician license and I can tell you they don't teach you very much about makeup with either ,you do makeup for a couple weeks and both stateboards are really about making sure you know your sanitation, I took seperate classes while in school bridal makeup ,airbrush makeup up ,I think it looks good to have a license but makeup classes or mua school teach you more and hands on practice.

Cosmetology school is focused on hair...you learn little makeup skills if any depending on where you go to school of course. You do not need to be licensed to do makeup!

I would definitely go for it. Some of the people who that kind of stuff make a lot of money, but you have to get into the right place to make that much money.
I want to do it when I get the chance :)

I suggest taking a makeup course in your area if you research you'll find Mua classes and you'll have a great idea what the styles are and information that is needed in this business.YouTube and blogs are not reliable if you want to expand and get the correct info but some are ok for general basics but trust me when you really want to get pass all that and get to the depth of it practice and get all the info you can soak up :-) this business is more then eyeshadow and if your heart is in the right place you'll be great  :-)

I would suggest just taking makeup courses I'm in cosmetology school right now. I want to do make up for a living and honestly the majority you do is hair. Having a cosmetology license can open many doors in life if that's what you truly want to do though.

You should definitely go for it. Thinking about when you go professional, it looks better and you're more likely to get clients if you have a certificate. It's more credible than self taught. :)

Cosmetology mainly focuses on hair and briefly touches on makeup. If your main focus is makeup than cosmetology is not the way to go. Find classes and schools in your area that is primarily makeup.

Oh just one quick info most famous Mua are self taught NEVER had makeup courses or classes.Kevin A. Billy B. So don't be discourage just work at it you will get the clients if your work is up to par :-) I believe there is to much Misconceptions of what it takes to be a MUA, it takes skill, networking and business ethic its not all easy but worth the ride in the end.

I would definitely do it. Despite YouTube and other resources being great places for information, having one-on-one time with an instructor and classmates will teach you many things you might not be able to learn on your own. Industry professionals also have some secrets tricks and techniques that are not publicly accessible.

Cosmetology school is mainly for hair. it will cover a little bit of makeup but not much at all. its a ton of hours and time. if you don't want to do hair I wouldn't suggest it. take some make up classes, build your skills with practice. unless you want to do makeup in a salon, there's no need for cosmo school.

If you want a full fledged basics and advanced look at makeup go to Napoleon Perdis Makeup Academy in Hollywood. I went there you get a certificate saying you've been trained you can take a bunch of different classes. You get lots of industry expierience once you're an alumni I've done two fashion shows and a photoshoot all in Los Angeles through them plus you get lots of connections. It's easier to find a job because you have their name behind you. They give you all the tools, amazing high end quality makeup and they help set you up for an amazing career. Do it!

They have makeup academies, you should look into that. Learning out on your own won't teach you all the safety precautions and what to look out for as far as skin conditions. Cosmetology makes you a "jack of all ttades, master of none". I should know, iM a cosmetologist who just wanted to do makeup, now I'm licensed but watching YouTube tutorials trying to master the craft.

Btw: the professional makeup classes that people are mentioning usually are only open to licensed professionals (iWanted to learn lashes in depth but iHad to be licensed first)

Dear N.

If you do make sure there is a real makeup program! I'm a nail tech and I remember students being so upset when there was just a week or two on makeup and everything else was on hair.

I suggest going to cos school. I am a graduate and did find it beneficial for fundamentals! It is mainly focused on hair, but the textbooks are great! You are able to keep them and refer to them as you learn and expand your clientele... I do believe that, you should have a lil bit of "raw talent"...because it won't teach you everything but it will definitely make you legit!!
