I'm about to start wearing foundation and I want to know if I need a primer. If I do any suggestions.

It depends if your skin is oily or dry. If oily it will be a good idea since it will last longer and will be easier to put on.

Both skin types need it, oily skins would go for something more silicone and oil free for more of a matte finish and dry skins would go for a lotion based for hydration they make your makeup last longer. get a sample at a sephora near you and see the difference it makes

You don't HAVE to...but I really recommend it. I wore foundation for years without primer, but now that I use it, I can totally see a difference when I don't wear it. I definitely suggest trying one, especially if you have oily skin. It helps my makeup last a lot longer!
