I love using gel liners though I did discover a Loreal felt tip liquid pen that applies like a dream.

I like gel and felt pen also. @Shelley is that loreal pen new because I saw it on a commercial and wanted it but I can't find it in my local stores?

I use them both combined, first pencil eyeliner on the top lid and over it I draw a thin line with the liquid liner, it adds complex shade and depth to the eye.

Gel or liquid is best for the top lid.
pencils are best for your upper & lower waterlines.
DON't use liquid for your water lines.. ever :/ lolol.
