Pin Curls or 1950s hair..

I want to do like a retro 50s style hair... I have watched tons and tons of youtube videos and I cannot figure out pin curls for the life of me. I can't do a wetset because I have naturally frizzy hair anyway and its damage still in the process. But I tried using a curling iron. My hair always gets tangled in the clips or knots up.. I've tried using a curling iron and wand, and no matter what I do I cannot get it. Can someone help me or give me some tips??

I would like to help you, but I think it's all about practice... Also there are some blowers which are special designed for curling->
