Follow the line of your eye and build it up. If I make sense? :) is it with or without wing you want?

Another thing try with a felt tip liquid eyeliner first,it's easier to put on.

My tip is to make sure you really press it into the top lashes to get as close to them as you can and then build up from there. you just don't want a space (no matter how tiny) between the line and your lashes because it looks funky! Also, maker sure you kind of go inside the eye rim at the inner corner of your eye. If it is really thick at the inner corner and not gradient and thickest on the outside, that looks funky too.
I agree about the felt tip liners, or in general with a stiffer brush. They are way easier to apply with while you get used to it. Or just a traditional pencil works too, just make sure to set it if it doesn't dry by itself.

I would recommend using a retractable pencil for your first eyeliner. They're soft but provide good depth and color without having to press hard. Sephora and Rimmel make good ones.
