You need a good primer or base, shadows that aren't too bright, and a nice fluffy brush that you can use to soften any harsh lines, a flat eyeshadow brush to pack on shadow, and a small dome brush that fits into your crease for crease color. I would use a little bit of shadow at a time, it is hard to take off than it is to put on.

A simple way would be to apply a light shadow all over up to the brow bone with either a lay down brush or your finger, then a mid brown into the crease using a blending brush and along the lower lash line with a smaller brush. Then also use the small brush to apply a dark brown onto the outer corner of the upper lid, the outer edge of the crease and the outer edge of the lower lash line. Then use a clean small brush or your little finger to apply a shimmery colour to the tear duct to open up the eyes. This doesn't just apply to neutral colours, you can use that placement with any variety of light/medium/dark and shimmer colours whatever colour they are. Urban decay's naked palette is super popular for neutrals but if you're not very confident with makeup try the MUA undressed palette. It's a dupe of the naked palette and a very good one - have a look at some swatches of the two compared to each other. Or you could buy one of those eyeshadow trios that most brands sell that come with a light, medium and dark shade and then you would just need a light shimmery colour for the tear duct if you wanted. You don't have to though you can just use the light colour that you used all over it just won't stand out as much
