I'm really interested in becoming a professional makeup artist. For those of you that work in the field, how did you get started?

Depending on there you live you might not need to be licensed.
Here in new York you don't, unless you want to cut hair. Then you needs license

Actually Carolyn in New York even if you just want to shampoo hair now, you need to licensed. I'm a student in a beauty school in New York and very close to graduating and than having to take my two part exam.

Go to beauty school directory.com and fill out the form and the nearest school will be in contact with you! some places will teach makeup classes and certify you in the end buy in my opinion its best to go for the full cosmetology license. looks great on resumes and clients like when you can supply the full package!

I actually started off in retail cosmetics to gain experience applying makeup and got a job doing film makeup. I went to beauty school but never got my cosmetology license because it is a waste of time if you just want to pursue MAKEUP. Hair is not my really my thing even though I learned the basics of it. So in my opinion if you don't have connections get your certification in make up because they provide you with a kit, brushes and some do photoshoots to build your portfolio. Keep in mind however that the only makeup school that offers financial aid and direct student loans is MUD and any other you would have to save about $3000 and pay in advance. Good Luck!
