Hair wand help!!?

Soooo I've been trying to use the hair wand thing and its not working out for me. I've been seeing such beautiful curls and waves done with them but I can't seem to get it rite!! I bought the cheap conair one and it's just making really tight curls and I don't like it. Could my hair be to long (its down to my butt) and do they make wands in different sizes?
