I need help on this too, the only advice I have is to make sure your stylist cuts your hair when its dry, not wet.

Did you ever check into a Ouidad or Deva Hair cut? Both cuts are meant for curly hair and make a world of a difference. Every few years I switch between cuts for a change but live them both. The Deva cut is cut dry and Ouidad hair cut is done with a razor.

Are these terms that a stylist should know?

They would only know the terms if they do that type of hair cut. If you google the names you can find the salons or certified salons that do those cuts :)

Well I'm not sure about the hair cut but my hair is curly as well and what I do to define my curls after my hair drys I get a spray bottle (water) and I spray it in the my hair only from the out side not where my hair is covered the next morning my hair is very define and something I would recommend is to add a volume hair style and not so many layers

Please don't cut your hair with a razor if its real curly, it can make the hair look frizzy regardless to what some hair dressers may think, when you get it cut have them point cut each curl separate, it makes a huge difference rather than blunt cutting or even point cutting a full section. I love getting curly haired clients :)

Also look for someone who is good with curly hair, or even who has curly hair themselves cutting curly and straight hair are two different techniques with and two different textures, and different care.

Seek out a Deva trained stylist. As a curly gal I only trust those stylist to cut my hair and to use a razor on curly hair...might as well put a lit match to your hair. Causes more damage than you know.

When I was growing up with curly hair, hair-stylists didn't know how to cut it. They would wet it down and comb it straight and then cut it. It never came out right! But these days, more stylists know how to cut curly hair. Good for you, not fighting with the nature of your hair by straightening it and staying curly! Many people have offered great advice on cutting, so I won't repeat what they say. Just don't get too many layers or it'll poof up like a poodle. And make sure the layers are long, not short. Always use leave-in conditioner. Even a little shea butter or coconut oil applied from the ears down to the ends will keep frizz under control.
